Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project

Under this project, aging and deteriorating highways, roads, culverts and bridges that are mainly affected by landslides in the Scotland District of Barbados will be rehabilitated or reconstructed.

The Scotland District is unique as it is the highest peak of a massive Caribbean underwater mountain range which stretches from Trinidad to Puerto Rico. The area is said to have the shape of a half-bowl. The Scotland District touches seven parishes on the island: parts of St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. James, St. Joseph, St. Thomas and St. John, however, the parish of St. Andrew sits completely within the Scotland District. The soil composition and topography within the Scotland District comprise mostly chalk and clays, making the area extremely vulnerable to landslides especially after rainfall.

The Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project is funded by the Export-Import Bank of China to the sum of Bds$230 million. The contractor, China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation Ltd (COMPLANT), executes the work in collaboration with local construction firms, artisans and engineers. The Ministry has procured the services of Design Collaborative in association with Professional Engineering Services Limited to carry out project management and engineering services.
