A SECTION OF COGGINS HILL, ST. ANDREW PAVED

A section of Coggins Hill in St. Andrew has been paved; work continues on the other section.

Paving has commenced on a section of Coggins Hill in St. Andrew, which is one of 16 active worksites under the Ministry of Transport and Works’ (MTW) Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project.

On Friday, March 7, 2025, a team from C.O. Williams Construction Ltd. paved approximately 300 metres of the 1350-metre road. Reconstruction began in April 2024, to enhance road stability and improve drainage in the area.

As part of the roadworks, the Barbados Water Authority replaced and upgraded water mains in the community, and several Barbados Light and Power Company poles were relocated. Two catch basins, one spillway, and 817 metres of box drains on both sides of the road are being built to channel water into natural water courses. The project involved excavating the road and rebuilding the subbase, as well as widening Coggins Hill from approximately 3.8 metres to 5 metres. The work is being done by the China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation (COMPLANT), and its sub-contractor C.O. Williams Construction.

Districts in St. Andrew are generally prone to land slippage due to the topography and plasticity of the soils in the parish, making construction in the area significantly more challenging. As work continues on site, the remaining section of Coggins Hill is estimated to be paved in the upcoming months in the dry season.

MTW thanks residents and road users for their patience and cooperation as the ministry seeks to enhance roads within the rural parishes and throughout the island. (PR/MTW)
