Drainage solutions continue to be implemented at Reece Road

Slipper and kerb as well as box drains were built at Reece Road. The road also has three suckwells and one natural soak away.

The Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) is currently in the process of implementing a solution to mitigate an existing flooding problem at the southern entrance of Reece Road in St Thomas. Reece Road is currently undergoing reconstruction as part of the Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project.

Based on the concerns raised by the owner of B’s Recycling, Paul Bynoe, the Ministry’s representative on the Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project, George Holder, met with Mr. Bynoe on Friday, February 21, 2025 at B’s Recycling.

During the meeting, Mr. Bynoe expressed that he believed a single suckwell under construction near the front of his property is insufficient for combating an existing flooding problem. He proposed the suckwell should be connected to an existing well to assist with capturing run off water during rainfall. The Ministry and COMPLANT have incorporated Mr. Bynoe’s proposed solution into its flood mitigation plans for Reece Road. Consequently, throughout this week, COMPLANT has been redesigning drainage infrastructure in preparation for construction of this section of the road.

Reece Road is one of 16 ongoing road construction projects under the Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Project. The China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation (COMPLANT), and its subcontractor Natron Inc., began work on Reece Road in April 2024. To date, it is approximately 85 percent completed. The 685-metre long road underwent a complete reconstruction with the aim of improving drainage as well as the road’s durability and longevity. Since it is a secondary road, it is 4.8 metres wide which is the standard width for these types of roads. In addition to utility upgrades, slipper and kerb was built and the road now has three suckwells and one natural soak away.

When the small section at the southern entrance of Reece Road is completed, the road will be paved. MTW continues to thank residents, businesses, and road users for their cooperation and understanding during the construction of Reece Road. (PR/MTW)
