The Utilities Section of the Ministry of Transport and Works coordinates and manages the utility activities of private agencies, companies and utility companies on the public road infrastructure throughout the island.
It also provides assistance and information to persons who have concerns, questions and requests within the scope of utility works.
Duties of the Utilities Section include
Assist with planning the Ministry’s projects that require the relocation or installation of utility plants and the associated activity.
Assist with the planning of the Ministry’s projects that require the relocation or installation of utility plant and the associated activity.
Collect projected works programmes of utility agencies for the Ministry’s review and have these coordinated in conjunction with the MTW, Rural & Urban works programme. This is to control civil work activities on the road corridors and to enforce timely road restoration.
Facilitates the repair of the BWA’s road openings such as burst mains and the reinstatement of the tracks caused by these mains replacement and extensions through the MTW depots.
It is required that all work, inclusive of damage structures, is measured and estimated, and the cost is recovered from the utility company.
Investigate, approve and control the installation of street lighting and to monitor the cost associated with this activity.
Manage the implementation of telecommunication activities (VHF, UHF, Telephone,) and present mobile phone platforms, also with relevance to the billing and cost analysis.
Police, in association with the Depots, any civil works conducted in the carriageway without prior permission.
