Over the last few months, the Paving Unit of the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) along with the ministry’s contractors have been carrying out milling and paving works on various roads across the island.
While contractors C. O Williams Construction Ltd, Infra Construction Inc. and B and R Infrastructure Ltd have milled 15 roads, the Paving Unit was responsible for completing the work on these roads.
These are: Lodge Hill, St. Michael; Bottom Bay, St. Philip; Foul Bay, St. Philip; Station Hill, St. Peter; Philips Road, St. Joseph; Friendly Hall Road, St. Lucy; Bakers Tenantry Road, St. Peter; King’s Village, St. James; Cassia Drive, St. James; Sargeant’s Village Tenantry Road, Christ Church; Buttlers Avenue, Christ Church; Shandra Close, Christ Church; Gays Road, St. Peter; Springfield Road, St. Joseph and Warrens Terrace, St. Michael.
Currently, milling has commenced in Pine Gardens, St. Michael, with paving to follow from Thursday, October 30. Browne’s Gap in Christ Church and Powder Gap, off Station Hill, St. Michael are also scheduled to be paved.
At present, the Ministry of Transport and Works is also undertaking a Focused Roads programme, which started in February this year, where a number of roads are also being milled and paved.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works, Santia Bradshaw, “These are roads that were identified following the Accelerated Mill and Pave Programme last year, that were more complex and needed more work. These roads under the Focused Road Programme incorporate the utility companies and contractors, where they undertake more rehabilitation of the roads.
The DPM added, “Over 60 roads have been assessed by Professional Engineering Services Ltd (PESL), the consultants responsible for overseeing the project. The ministry has been working with five contractors across the country both in the rural and urban corridors to bring a level of relief to a number of communities, with the majority being residential roads. To date. about 25 roads have been completed with the other roads either ongoing or soon about to commence.”
The estimated cost of the programme is $23 million, which along with the Focused Roads, also incorporated a Highway Maintenance programme. This programme saw a few stretches of highway also being rehabilitated, – areas such as the Kooyman/Deighton section of the ABC Highway, the Top Rock area and the Wildey Triangle in St. Michael.
